Diadora Borg Elite Gold Trainers

In the 1970s sportswear of all kinds exploded onto the fashion scene with Diadora being a key player in this who later began to combine leather with new high performance materials to produce incredible looking trainers. They combined the performance materials with durability, quality and responsiveness to aid in its effectiveness as a sportswear shoe.

It was during this period in the 70s that Diadora started its legendary partnership with sporting superstars, with one of those being  Bjorn Borg.  From this partnership the Diadora Borg Elite was born and seen as the ultimate tennis shoe, the Diadora Borg Elite Gold was the leading, most desired fashion shoe of 1981 and afforded by few but adored by many.

The long term sponsorship deal between Diadora and Bjorn Borg in 1981 was the major catalyst that lead to the launch of the legendary Diadora Borg Elite Gold shoe in Kangaroo leather. It was one of the most expensive shoes of its time costing between £90-£100, but with its elitist looks it made Diadora an instant hit with 80s casuals and sportswear fans of the time, with Diadora shoes becoming part of the casual’s uniform. The 80s casuals competed against rivals who also had top quality threads. Eventually different colour variations of the Diadora Borg Elite trainer were issued around the same time but in lesser materials such as premium leathers and came in white with navy Diadora logo, white with green and white with silver Diadora logo.

Since the early 80s the Diadora Borg Elite Gold, due to popularity among many, has been relaunched approximately every 5 years. This helps in part to retain its exclusivity as a popular piece, with avid collectors, who in the 80s were young lads who couldn’t afford them, now being in their 40s and able to buy multiple pairs.

With alot help from collectors, who have played a key role in getting these re-issued, and films like The Firm and The Business awareness of this iconic shoe has grown considerably and helped to boost the profile of Diadora on a global scale with more and more interest being taken in Diadora’s products.

The last major re-issue of the Diadora Borg Elite Gold was back in late 2009 early 2010 with a price of approximately £105, which in today’s money is still a high price but one that we stress is a worthy one to pay for something that meant so much to so many people.
